India's national bird has some serious secrets you probably never knew

The peacock struts through our mythology, our gardens, and our currency — but how well do we actually know it? Turns out, quite poorly.

The bird we think we know

The peacock is everywhere in India — painted on pottery, dancing in monsoon fields, frozen on the back of a fifty-rupee note. We grow up with it. We celebrate it. And yet, most of us are walking around with a surprisingly shaky understanding of how this bird actually works.

A closer look at peafowl biology reveals an animal that has quietly evolved some genuinely clever tricks, none of which have much to do with simply looking pretty.

It flies, and that famous 'tail' is a lie

Let's start with the two most stubborn myths. First: peacocks can absolutely fly. The long, trailing plumage that makes them look grounded is actually not their tail at all — it's a separate structure called the train, which grows from the bird's upper tail coverts. The real tail sits underneath, shorter and hidden, and during courtship it acts as a kind of scaffolding that holds the enormous train upright while the male fans it out.

When a peacock does need to move fast — say, away from a dog in a Delhi park — it takes off with a powerful, if dramatic, burst and can glide cleanly onto a rooftop or high branch. Those strong legs do the initial heavy lifting; the wings handle the rest.

Communication you can't quite see or hear

The courtship display isn't just a visual performance. When a male shakes his train rapidly, the movement creates low-frequency vibrations and subtle sounds that peahens can detect at close range — essentially a sensory channel humans can barely register. Researchers believe this hidden layer of communication helps females assess a male's health and fitness beyond what's visible to the eye.

And those colours themselves? Not a drop of pigment is involved. The electric blues and greens come entirely from microscopic structures inside each feather that bend and reflect light differently depending on the angle — a phenomenon called structural colouration. It's the same principle behind some butterfly wings and soap bubbles, and it's why a peacock's feathers seem to shift and glow as the bird moves.

Why this matters for a food audience in India

Peacocks aren't just a cultural symbol — they're a living presence in the landscapes where much of India's food is actually grown. Farmers across Rajasthan, Gujarat, and the Deccan plateau regularly share fields with peafowl, and the relationship is complicated: peacocks eat insects and small reptiles that damage crops, but they also raid grain stores and vegetable patches with enthusiasm.

In many rural communities, the peacock is treated as a near-sacred guest — harming one is illegal under the Wildlife Protection Act — so farmers have had to develop workarounds rather than deterrents. That negotiated coexistence is a quiet, underappreciated thread running through Indian agricultural life, and it's worth knowing about the next time you spot one of these birds picking its way through a field on the highway to somewhere.

Also worth knowing: only the male bird is technically a peacock. Females are peahens, youngsters are peachicks, and the species as a whole is peafowl. A small correction that, if nothing else, will win you at least one argument at a dinner table.
