Rasam is more than comfort food — and the science is starting to catch up

South Indian kitchens have known it for generations. Now a pharmacognosy review is putting numbers to what rasam actually does for your body — from blood sugar to iron absorption.

The bowl that never needed a rebrand

There is something quietly stubborn about rasam. It has never had a glow-up moment, never appeared on a trend report, and absolutely no one is calling it a superfood on Instagram. And yet, ask almost anyone who grew up in a South Indian home what they reach for when they are sick, tired, or just homesick, and rasam comes up before anything else.

Deepika Padukone said as much recently, confirming that rasam-rice is her comfort food — a fact she has mentioned before, and even illustrated with an animated video of a girl at a fancy restaurant who lights up the moment she spots rasam on the menu. It is a small, recognisable moment. But beyond the nostalgia, a review published in the journal Pharmacognosy has been quietly assembling the case that rasam earns its place at the table on scientific grounds too.

What the research actually says

The most striking finding involves blood sugar. South Indian meals that included rasam showed a significant improvement in glycemic and triacylglycerol response after eating. A separate study tracked forty adults between thirty and sixty years old who consumed rasam daily and found a meaningful drop in blood sugar levels. Researchers point to the tomatoes and the spice blend — the tamarind, pepper, cumin, and garlic that form rasam's backbone — as the likely drivers.

On iron, the numbers are genuinely interesting. A tamarind-based rasam fortified with iron showed absorption rates above 70%, compared to 30–37% for a standard version. The review also notes that rasam enriched with Spirulina improved haemoglobin and serum iron markers in anaemic patients. Given how widespread iron-deficiency anaemia is across India, particularly among women, this is worth paying attention to.

The traditional uses hold up too. Tribal communities in Tamil Nadu's Krishnagiri district have long used rasam to manage fever, colds, and diarrhoea. Nursing mothers in coastal Andhra Pradesh communities have traditionally had a bowl of rasam in the evenings to support milk secretion. The review also records antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, E. coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa — which at least partially explains why rasam has been the go-to remedy in Indian households long before anyone called it functional food.

Why this matters for a food audience in India

India has a complicated relationship with its own everyday cooking. Dosas get celebrated abroad, biryani gets its own festivals, but the thin, broth-like rasam — the one your grandmother ladled out without ceremony — rarely gets the same attention. That is starting to feel like an oversight.

For food lovers, home cooks, and anyone thinking seriously about what they eat, rasam is a case study in how traditional knowledge and modern research can actually align. It is inexpensive, deeply regional, infinitely variable across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala, and now there is a growing body of evidence suggesting it does real things for the body. You do not need a functional food label on the packet. The recipe has been there all along.
