A well-meaning mistake with a very long shadow
Someone in Kerala's forest department made a reasonable call in 1986: plant a few Senna spectabilis trees near a forest office and along some roadsides in Wayanad. The tree is native to tropical America, grows fast, flowers in cheerful yellow, and provides shade. It looked like a practical, even pretty, solution.
What nobody flagged at the time was that Senna had already earned a bad reputation across Africa, Asia and Australia — a serial coloniser that moves in and doesn't leave. Kerala's forest department officially recognised it as invasive only in 2011, a full quarter-century after the first saplings went into the ground. By then, the tree had been quietly rewriting Wayanad's landscape for years.
From a few saplings to a third of the sanctuary
The numbers from researcher P.A. Vinayan's mapping are striking. Senna's footprint inside Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary grew from under 16 square kilometres in 2013–14 to nearly 124 square kilometres in the most recent survey — roughly an eightfold increase in a single decade, now accounting for about 35% of the sanctuary's total area.
A bamboo die-off around 2012 gave it an opening: cleared ground, less competition, and Senna moved right in before bamboo could bounce back. Then the wildlife helped it along. A 2021 study led by researcher Anoop N.R. found that Asian elephants, chital, and Indian crested porcupines all carry Senna seeds in their dung. One elephant dropping alone can contain around 2,000 seeds. Senna fruits in summer, precisely when elephant numbers in Wayanad peak because of seasonal migration from across the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — a coincidence of timing that has worked entirely in the invasive tree's favour.
Why this matters for a food audience in India
This isn't just an ecology story. It's a food story — specifically, the slow disappearance of a forest larder that tribal communities in Wayanad have relied on for generations.
Wherever Senna's dense canopy takes hold, sunlight disappears from the forest floor. Its fallen leaves seem to alter the soil in ways that discourage other plants from establishing themselves. The result: gooseberries, wild tubers, mushrooms and the many other forest foods that indigenous communities forage are quietly vanishing from the patches Senna dominates. Even the animals that eat a little of it gain almost nothing nutritionally from it. Butterflies are losing the specific plants they need to lay eggs, which ripples outward into pollination and, eventually, into what grows and what doesn't.
For anyone who cares about where food comes from — its landscape, its ecology, its cultural memory — Wayanad is a clear illustration of how a single introduced species can unravel something that took centuries to settle into balance.
Removal is harder than it looks
Forest departments in Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have all tried to push back. Girdling, debarking and manual uprooting have been attempted with inconsistent results. Early debarking trials in Wayanad killed only a fraction of the treated trees; many simply regrew vigorously from the cut stumps. There is no clean or quick fix on the table yet.
What Wayanad's Senna problem makes plain is that the cost of not asking the right questions at the beginning — where does this species come from, what has it done elsewhere — can compound silently for decades before anyone is ready to reckon with it.
