A cemetery with one very different secret
Arlington National Cemetery is one of those places that stops you mid-step. Row after row of identical white headstones, each one carrying a name and a date, the geometry of it almost too neat to feel real. Millions of people have walked those paths. Most leave without knowing that one of those graves is fundamentally unlike every other.
It isn't the person buried there that makes it different. It's what's still inside the coffin — and why it can never, legally or safely, be disturbed.
What happened in Idaho on a January night in 1961
The story begins not in Virginia but in the Idaho desert, roughly 40 miles west of Idaho Falls, at a small experimental military reactor called SL-1. The reactor's purpose was deeply practical and very much of its era: it was designed to power remote radar stations watching for Soviet aircraft or missiles, a cheaper alternative to shipping diesel fuel to isolated Cold War outposts.
On the night of 3 January 1961, three operators — Army Spc. John Arthur Byrnes, Navy Seabee Richard Carlton Legg, and SP4 Richard McKinley — returned to the reactor after a ten-day holiday break. None of them knew they were about to be involved in the United States' first fatal nuclear accident.
According to Argon Electronics, a company that builds nuclear-hazard training simulators, an operator pulled the reactor's central control rod too far out of its housing. The reactor went supercritical within milliseconds. The resulting blast was powerful enough to launch the reactor's 26,000-pound core more than nine feet into the air, blowing open the plugs at the top and firing control rods into the ceiling like projectiles. The reactor room instantly filled with steam, contaminated water, and radioactive fragments.
Byrnes and Legg died almost immediately. McKinley, a Korean War veteran, was still alive when rescuers arrived over 90 minutes later — but he died shortly after being placed in an ambulance. He was 27 years old.
The burial that had to be engineered like a containment unit
While Byrnes and Legg were buried in their hometowns, McKinley's wife requested that he be laid to rest at Arlington. His family watched the eight-minute funeral from 20 feet away. He was sealed in a double lead-lined casket, lowered into a ten-foot grave, and encased in concrete for additional containment.
Decades on, his file still carries a formal warning: *"Victim of nuclear accident. Body is contaminated with long-life radioactive isotopes."* It also notes that his remains cannot be moved without the approval of the Atomic Energy Commission. The grave is considered completely safe to visit — the shielding does its job — but it cannot be exhumed. It is, in that sense, permanent in a way no other grave in the country is.
The SL-1 accident went on to reshape how the United States approached nuclear safety regulation, and the lessons from that Idaho night are still woven into reactor protocols today.
