There's a particular kind of frustration reserved for opening your fridge and finding water pooled under the vegetable drawer, your leftover sabzi sitting in a damp container, or the back wall dripping like a monsoon window. You wipe it down, close the door, and two days later it's back.
Before you assume the appliance is broken, it helps to know that a small amount of condensation is completely normal — a brief mist on the back wall after the door's been open usually disappears within an hour. The kind that keeps returning, soaks into food, or pools on shelves long after the door is shut? That's worth investigating.
Start with the door seal and your temperature dial
The rubber gasket running around your fridge door is almost always where persistent moisture problems begin. There's a quick way to test it: close the door on a strip of paper so it's pinched between the gasket and the frame, then pull it slowly. If it slides out without much resistance, the seal has weakened at that point. It's worth repeating this at several spots around the door, since gaskets tend to fail in one section rather than all at once. Before assuming the whole gasket needs replacing, try wiping out the inner folds with warm, soapy water — built-up crumbs or stickiness can break the seal just as effectively as an actual tear.
Temperature setting is the other culprit people overlook. The ideal range is roughly 2°C to 4°C, but the numbered dial on most fridges doesn't always reflect what's actually happening inside. An inexpensive appliance thermometer is the only reliable way to check. Set it too warm and moisture condenses on the interior surfaces; set it too cold and frost builds up on the back wall, melts during the defrost cycle, and overwhelms the drainage system — creating a different but equally soggy problem.

High ambient humidity — particularly during the monsoon months and in coastal cities like Mumbai, Chennai, and Kolkata — means warm, moisture-laden air rushes into the fridge every single time you open the door. The way we store food also plays a direct role. Freshly washed methi, coriander, or spinach placed in the fridge while still damp, uncovered bowls of dal or curry, and produce that hasn't been dried before storing all quietly push more humidity into the fridge's interior air. Wiping produce dry before it goes in, wrapping leftovers tightly, and using airtight containers rather than open bowls makes a measurable difference — not just to moisture levels, but to how long the food actually stays fresh.
The fixes that people rarely think to check
Beyond the seal and the temperature, there are two less obvious causes worth knowing about.
First, airflow. A tightly packed fridge feels efficient but works against you — when containers block internal vents or press too close to the back wall, cold air can't circulate evenly, and warm spots form where moisture concentrates. Leaving a little breathing room between items, and keeping vents clear, helps the fridge maintain an even temperature throughout.
Second, the defrost drain. Most fridges have a small drain that carries away water from the automatic defrost cycle. When it gets blocked with food debris, that water has nowhere to go except pooling inside the fridge. If you suspect a clog, unplug the appliance first, then clear the channel gently with a pipe cleaner or thin wire. One thing to avoid: pouring hot water directly into the drain to melt a blockage can cause internal damage to the appliance.
And finally — the one almost nobody checks — level the fridge. If it isn't sitting evenly on the floor, the internal drainage system can't do its job properly, and water pools at the lowest point instead of flowing toward the drain pan. A bubble level on top of the fridge and a couple of turns on the front levelling feet can solve what seemed like a complicated moisture problem in under five minutes.
Working through these in order — seal, temperature, food storage, airflow, drainage, level — usually turns up the real cause without needing a repair call. Drier shelves, genuinely fresher food.
